Show notes

Introduction

It is the 20th of March, 2020. Welcome to episode 7 of the Delivering Development podcast, helping language teachers and others in the field to enhance their professional development. My name is Kevin Westbrook, and with me today are Laura Styles, Neil Bullock and Pete Sharma.

This is a special edition brought out in the light of the ongoing covid-19 pandemic aiming to help you to continue serving your customers.

We started with a quick overview of the situation in general and for teaching in Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

We then each talked about how to deal with a particular aspect of teaching in the current circumstances:

Neil – spoke about how distance teaching makes it possible to provide authentic situations in certain circumstances, such as spoken communication in the aviation business. Kevin added that this was also valid for maritime situations. It could just as well be a simple telephone conversation.

Kevin – gave some information on online storage possibilities, namely Google Drive, OneDrive and YouTube and the scope for using them as a repository for teaching materials, videos of presentations, etc.

Laura – continued the YouTube theme and spoke about how to embed videos in other platforms. She also mentioned EdPuzzle as a great way to use video. The link for this is here: https://edpuzzle.com/

Pete – with reference to Zoom, the platform we use to record the podcast, Pete spoke about the importance of getting familiar with whatever software you are using. We have recently been investigating the use of breakout rooms in Zoom, for example, and for it to work smoothly, you clearly need to understand how to operate them.
